Alohi Gilman has been continuing to improve each season and his 2023 season continued that trend. He was in on 73 tackles (49 solo) and had two interceptions, three forced fumbles, and 10 passes defended – all of which are career highs. He likely would have had even more stats if he had not missed three games due to injury. The improvement in coverage was also noticeable. He went from a 54.3 Pro Football Focus score in 2022 to 86.1 in 2023 and established himself firmly as a viable starting safety in the league.

Gilman initially started out in college with the Navy in 2016 and then transferred to Notre Dame after his freshman year, where he remained through 2019. He set out his sophomore year due to NCAA transfer rules, and pulled in three interceptions over the course of his remaining two years in college.

In 2020 he was drafted by the Chargers in the sixth round. In his rookie year, he scarcely had any playing time, having only one start and only having seven tackles on the season. His second year initially started off similarly, but he got playing time late in the season due to the team being bogged down by injuries. He pulled in his first career interception that year.

In 2022 he was trusted with a bigger role and finished with 58 tackles (35 solo), one interception, and three passes defended. That segued into his proper breakout year in 2023 – in the final year of his rookie deal, no less. He has shown improvement every year so far.

Thus far in his career, Gilman has 180 tackles (117 solo), four interceptions, and four forced fumbles.
