The Green Bay Packers may release Aaron Jones if both sides can’t agree on a restructured contract. The Packers are hoping that Jones takes a pay cut ahead of the 2024 season. Green Bay met with Jones’ agent to discuss his contract negotiations in hopes of adjustment. Both are in the talking stage to ensure that Jones still receives fair pay while being with the Packers.
If the two sides can’t agree on free agency, then expect Green Bay to cut ties with Jones. He’s entering his final year of a four-year, $48 million contract. Jones is slated to earn a base salary of $11 million and carry a $17.6 million cap hit. The former Pro Bowler ended his season strong despite missing six games with an injury.
Jones had five consecutive 100-yard rushing performances that included 118 yards and three scores in an upset win over the Cowboys in the playoffs. This is something to watch as Jones has an optimistic future in Green Bay, but money is an issue. The chemistry that he has in Green Bay could be something that’s irreplaceable. Green Bay were pretty solid across the board too after their 3-6 start ending on a 6-2 run.
According to a report, the Packers aren’t expected to re-sign running back A.J. Dillion this offseason. He’s set to be an unrestricted free agent and his odds aren’t in his favor. Dillon was only able to rack up 613 rushing yards on 178 carries with 22 receptions for 223 yards receiving and touchdowns. However, he could still fill a team’s depth chart on a cheap deal.

A big reason why the running back position was consistent may have to do with their franchise quarterback, Jordan Love. The first-time starter last season throwing for 20 touchdowns and just one pick in a nine-game span following their 3-6 start. The Packers put on a clinic in their running game during his playoff win over the Cowboys. However, Love maintained the momentum by throwing touchdowns and a near-perfect passer rating.
So the Packers could be in trouble if they’re not able to at least retain Jones for next season. Jones has been integral to the success of the Packers offense, but if they’re not able to bring him back then they could look elsewhere. The NFL Draft is one option but how optimistic are they to think that the same running back they select could start week one? The Packers would probably need to bring in some type of star power to revive the position.
This year’s top free agent running backs are set to hit the market such as Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs and Saquon Barkley. However, they may look to get someone cheaper if they’re not able to afford the top candidates, According to a report, the Packers could look to extend quarterback Jordan Love. With this, Jones could be on his way out but he’ll have teams on his radar if he makes his exit.
Potential Destinations for Jones
The Dallas Cowboys could be one destination that could use some star power themselves. They won’t franchise-tag Tony Pollard, so it’s safe to assume that the Cowboys will be on the hunt. However, the Chargers are one team that could use a running back after they won’t franchise tag Austin Ekeler as well. There may be a new philosophy with Jm Harbaugh and his new coaching staff, so Jones may fit well with star quarterback, Justin Herbert.
The Ravens could be another team that needs a running back. Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins are set to hit the free agent market so they could both go their separate ways this month. Jones is more of a pass catcher and he may be able to complement Lamar Jackson on toss or play action plays.
