Every Defensive Line needs superstars. Of course, because superstars win you rings. However, real football fans know that the “bring your lunch pale” role players are just as crucial to winning. That’s why I’m a massive fan of Braden Fiske. Fiske was a 3-star recruit out of Michigan, Indiana, and committed to Western Michigan. During his first four years at Western Michigan, Fiske was a monster, registering 191 tackles, 36 tackles for loss, and 20 sacks. He then transferred to Florida State as a highly touted transfer for bigger opportunities on the big stage. As a Seminole, Fiske played all 13 games, accumulating 43 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and six sacks. He is a play wrecker and has a motor of a machine due to his love for football. However, is Fiske worth a high draft selection? Let’s dig into the film!

2024 NFL Draft: Braden Fiske Scouting Report

Fiske’s Strengths

  • That is an excellent first step: explosiveness. As soon as the ball is snapped, he fires out of his stance violently, jolting the offensive lineman. It could potentially be deadly, penetrating the field at the NFL level.
  • He has an impressive combination of size, speed, and quickness you can’t teach. Flashes high upside ceiling
  • Has a good bull rush and swim move to impact day one.
  • He shows severe flashes of Setting up offensive linemen to perform his pass-rush moves, showing his pass-rush plan.
  • Fantastic, high-energy motor. Will be a player to get sacks and tackles late in the down due to how incredibly hard he plays.
  • He, on one, blocks and tackles the ball carrier, running through his gap.

Fiske’s Weakness

  • Pad level is the most vital aspect of being a defensive tackle, and it’s not good, primarily because of his lack of arm length.
  • Not a consistent pass rusher due to inability to keep a low pad level and inconsistent hands.
  • Struggles vs double team. He plays with too high of a pad level and gets outworked by offensive linemen.
  • As with most quick penetrating defensive linemen, he can run out of the play, leaving his gap responsibilities open.
  • Can body hold up with his physical style of play?

Projection: Early Third Round Pick

NFL Comparison: Malcolm Roach

Best Fits: San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, and the Indianapolis Colts.

Bottom Line

Braden Fiske is the type of football player that fits every locker room. Tough, got it out of the mud, and is the team’s first player everyone loves to root for. However, after watching more of his films, I realized Fiske is different from your everyday role-player. He has exceptional talent, starting with his quickness and explosive first step. Braden has a nice swim move, bull rush, and tenacious motor to get after the QB. He sheds one-on-one blocks and has combined Marion of skills you can’t teach. My NFL pro comparison was Saints Malcolm Roach. Like Rosch, Fiske is impressive in getting after it in the run game while occasionally helping in the pass rush. Fiske could be a star if he could improve his pad level and hands.
