The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions again, which means fans of the team only have two months to obsess over every single mock draft leading up to the biggest event of the offseason. Even though the team hoisted their second Lombardi Trophy in as many years, there is some work to be done if they want to go for the three-peat.
While free agent decisions will be the first thing on the agenda, the NFL Draft is always the most important part of the team-building process. Finding young, cost-controlled starters is vital for sustained success, and Mike Kashuba’s latest mock draft has the Chiefs selecting their next great deep threat.
According to the mock draft, Kashuba believes that the Chiefs will select Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy with the 32nd pick.
Chiefs Add Explosive Playmaker In Latest Mock Draft
Xavier Worthy the Player
Before we discuss how Xavier Worthy could fit with this Chiefs mock draft, we first need to analyze him as a prospect. You can’t watch even one rep of Worthy’s without noticing his breakneck speed. As of this posting, Worthy had yet to officially run the 40-yard dash, but the tape tells you everything you need to know: this kid can blow by defenders with ease.

While Worthy’s speed is his biggest selling point, he’s more than just a one-trick pony. He’s shifty off the line with the quick footwork required to be an above-average route runner at the next level.
Worthy has game-breaking potential, but there is a reason a player this explosive can fall to the Chiefs in this mock draft. The Texas product is the type of receiver that is either open by two steps or not at all. Unofficially listed at 6′-1″ and 172 pounds, he lacks the strength to play through contact and will not outmuscle anybody at the catch point. Additionally, Worthy has too many ugly drops on tape, and Chiefs fans should know all too well just how dangerous drops can be.
Does This Chiefs Mock Draft Make Sense?
Are there safer wide receivers the Chiefs could select in this mock draft? Absolutely. However, nobody left on the board offers the same type of upside as Xavier Worthy, and that’s enough to justify a selection with the 32nd overall pick.
There is a chance that Worthy’s complete lack of size eliminates his chance to be anything more than just an average receiver in the NFL. However, if he’s going to succeed anywhere, it’s with the Kansas City Chiefs. Playing press-man coverage against Patrick Mahomes is asking for trouble, so Worthy shouldn’t have too much of an issue getting off the line of scrimmage.
Additionally, Andy Reid is the best in the league at scheming guys open, and Patrick Mahomes is unmatched at throwing his guys open. Outside of maybe Josh Allen, nobody has a stronger arm than Mahomes, as there’s no part of the field he can’t reach. It should go without saying that Xavier Worthy is not going to be the next Tyreek Hill, but he should be a clear upgrade on Marquez Valdes-Scantling. This mock draft is a risky pick for the Chiefs, but it’s a risk worth taking if guys like Ladd McConkey and Keon Coleman are already off the board.
