This Former NFL Coach Could Return to the Kansas City Chiefs

Here is how this former NFL coach, Eric Bieniemy could return to the Kansas City Chiefs to replace Matt Nagy as their offensive coordinator.
Bieniemy return Chiefs

This former NFL coach could return to the Kansas City Chiefs as their offensive coordinator. Former Washington Commander OC, Eric Bieniemy had the chance to speak with the Chiefs before their conference game. A familiar face that visited Kansas City could well be on his way to make his return. This could all depend if the Chiefs are successful in their Super Bowl matchup against the 49ers.

There was a report that Bieniemy did more than just speak to the offense. He actually went over the installation of a play as well with the group. Bieniemy was with the Chiefs from 2013-2022, taking over the offensive coordinator position in 2018. This was before he eventually took over as Commander’s top offensive coach.

In Bieniemy’s NFL tenure, he helped the Chiefs play in three of four Super Bowls from 2020-2023. He didn’t land an NFL head coaching job, but Patrick Mahomes still had great things to say about him. Reid was always the play-caller in Bieniemy’s tenure with the Chiefs, but he still contributed to an illustrious offense. This didn’t pan out with the Commanders as the team finished 4-13 and Washington did a clean sweep of their staff.

Bieniemy’s frequent visits with the Chiefs could mean that Reid may consider him for the offensive coordinator job after the Super Bowl. However, Reid isn’t allowed to say if a reunion is on the loom. Bieniemy does still have a chance to land another job if it’s not the Chiefs next season.

Could the reunion still happen?

A reunion could truly still happen if there is a disaster blowout this upcoming Super Bowl. If Bieniemy doesn’t land an OC gig in 2024, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he makes his return. The Chiefs are still having success under current OC, Matt Nagy, Despite his struggles, he still helped guys like Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Marquez Valdes-Scantling back to the promised land.

What’s baffling many talking heads around the league is how Bieniemy does not have a job yet. He turned a Kansas offense that was stagnant into one of the most dominant. However, there could be the issue that maybe he was overshadowed by Reid during his time with the Chiefs. This could be why Bieniemy wanted the opportunity to explore Washington on his own.

This didn’t last long as Washington are moving on from him. The Commanders brought in Kliff Kingsbury as his replacement under new staff in Washington. The question remains how responsible was Bieniemy’s presence for the success in recent years? Bieniemy still has close ties to Kansas City so no matter, he’s going to stick around the Chiefs for a long time.

The fact that Reid invited Bieniemy for a reunion before their AFC Championship win over the Ravens could spur the speculation game.

The Chiefs are focused on Super Bowl LVIII

For now, Kansas City is focused on its Super Bowl bout with the 49ers. The Chiefs have won two Super Bowls in the past four seasons and they’re looking to add another. Don’t be surprised if Bieniemy shows up since Reid will likely invite him along. One interesting thing that could happen is if they demote Nagy and hire Bieniemy.

While Bieniemy waits, he’s still expected to look for other jobs in case he does not make a return to the Chiefs. Anything can happen in the offseason even if the Chiefs win the ultimate prize.
