This Coach Could Return to the Dallas Cowboys as DC

Here is how the Mike Zimmer rumors are heating up as he could return to the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys as their defensive coordinator.
Mike Zimmer Cowboys

This NFL coach could make his return to the Dallas Cowboys as the new defensive coordinator. Former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer is reportedly interested in going back to Dallas. This could make since he has ties with the Cowboys and a history with Dallas head coach, Mike McCarthy. The Mike Zimmer Rumors are heating up, he spent a total of 13 seasons in Dallas before he took over the Vikings.

However, just because the tie was cut 17 years ago, doesn’t mean it’s over. Dallas could finally reunite with Zimmer after Dan Quinn decided to take the head coaching job with the Washington Commanders. An interview is still set for Ron Rivera next week as McCarthy is on the hunt for the defensive coordinator vacancy. Also, they still have Joe Whitt on their radar which makes all these candidates intriguing for Dallas.

Rivera is a veteran who’s shown that he can do his job, but Zimmer has as well. If Dallas wants to take longer than usual to find the candidate then they could do just that. Jerry Jones did mention he wants to go “all in” for the preparation for next season. They could go all in for Zimmer who spent eight seasons in Minnesota, winning 56% of his games.

Despite not having an NFL job during the 2023 season, he would also be a logical choice by joining forces with Mike McCarthy. So, the Mike Zimmer rumors are true, he becomes another choice for the Cowboys to consider.

Mike Zimmer Rumors: He Could Return to the Dallas Cowboys as Defensive Coordinator

History May Repeat Itself With Him Coming

The history between Zimmer and the Cowboys is no secret, he was on the coaching staff for the franchise’s last Super Bowl in 1995. However, at the time, he was just a defensive backs coach. He quickly worked his way up and was promoted to defensive coordinator. Even when Bill Parcells came in 2003, Zimmer stayed as DC.

Under the Minnesota Vikings, he helped them make the playoffs three times along reaching the NFC Championship game in 2017. The Vikings lost to the Philadelphia Eagles that game, but the season showed his potential. However, the NFL is changing and growing every year so history is just history. The Cowboys are prone to have a recent bad history, but they could change it around with Zimmer under the gun.

The way how Dallas was able to make it to the promised land with Zimmer part of the staff in 1995, only allows repeating itself. McCarthy has one year left in his head coaching contract, so if the Mike Zimmer rumors are true then he may take over. It could be a real possibility, but they may wait until after the upcoming season to explore other candidates like Bill Belichick. Replacing Dan Quinn won’t be an easy task, but Dallas could set the bar high.

With all the talent in Dallas, it makes the job attractive, especially for Zimmer who could make his NFL return very soon.

It’s Not All a Loss for the Cowboys

Presumably, it looked like it was a huge loss for the Cowboys to lose Dan Quinn. However, it’s not all a loss since Dallas has so many options to play with. While they have Rivera and Whitt under their radar, more candidates could emerge as a favorite down the line. It looks like an exciting time to be a Cowboys fan as they anticipate who they will hire as their next defensive coordinator.
