The New Orleans Saints are adding some running back depth to the roster, as the team has reportedly signed journeyman running back James Robinson. Robinson, a former undrafted free agent, most recently played with the Green Bay Packers but has also spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets, New England Patriots, and New York Giants.

The 2023 season has been an absolute whirlwind for the four-year NFL veteran. Before signing with the Saints, James Robinson has spent time with three other organizations since the start of the league year. The running back originally signed with the New England Patriots, but did not make it far in camp before being released. He then signed with the New York Giants but suffered a similar fate. Robinson finally made his regular season debut with the Green Bay Packers, appearing in one game while recording one carry for two yards.

James Robinson entered the league as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 season. Despite his humble beginnings, the Illinois State product immediately became the focal point of Jacksonville’s offense. Starting and appearing in 14 games, Robinson finished his rookie season with 240 carries for 1,o70 yards and seven touchdowns to go along with 49 receptions for 344 yards and three additional scores.

The Urban Meyer-led Jacksonville Jaguars added running back Travis Etienne in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, seemingly signaling the end of Robinson’s days atop the depth chart. However, the rookie suffered a season-ending injury in the offseason, allowing Robinson to start once again. Playing in 14 games, the running back recorded 767 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 164 attempts before suffering an Achilles injury.

Sadly, Robinson has never been able to recapture his form since that injury. In 2022, Robinson took a back seat to Etienne before eventually getting traded to the New York Jets. In total, he appeared in 11 games while averaging just 3.9 yards per carry.
