Dolphins Track and Field Background On Full Display During Hot Start

Three current Miami Dolphins players were track and field stars in college, and that speed is on display every Sunday.

They say speed kills. If that statement is true, then the Miami Dolphins are about to have one of the best seasons in team history. Three Dolphins players are former college track and field standouts. As an old saying goes, you cannot stop what you cannot catch.

Miami Dolphins Feature A Trio of Former Track and Field Stars

While it is fairly common to see NFL teams draft players who were once track and field stars in college, having three on one roster at a time is a rarity. Currently, a trio of Miami Dolphins were also stand-out track and field athletes at some point in their college careers.

The Dolphins Track and Field Champions

Tyreek Hill, in his brief tenure at Oklahoma State University as a football player (one season), was also a standout track and field athlete. While at Oklahoma State, Hill had personal bests in the indoor 60 meters with a time of 6.61 seconds, the outdoor 100 meters (10.19 seconds), and the 200 meters (20.14 seconds). Hill holds the Oklahoma State University indoor 60-meter record with a sprint time of 6.64 seconds. He also holds the school record in the indoor 200 meters (20.57 seconds).

Hill won the Big 12 Championship in the indoor 200 meters. He also won the Big 12 Indoor Freshman of the Year award. Hill was only in Stillwater for one year (2014), before he was dismissed for domestic assault and battery. He went on to finish his college football career at the University of West Alabama but did not participate in track and field.

Not to be outdone by Hill, Raheem Mostert was also a standout track and field athlete while at Purdue University. In 2014, Mostert took first place in the 60 meters (6.63 seconds) and the 200 meters (20.73) at the Big 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships. He would also go on to win first place in the Big 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships (2014). He took first in the 100 meters (10.30 seconds) as well as the 200 meters (20.66 seconds).

While two of the three players last ran track competitively almost a decade ago, there is a brand new Dolphin who can also fly. Devon Achane ranks in the top 10 all-time in the following track and field events in Texas A&M history: third in the indoor 60 meters (6.63 seconds), fourth in the outdoor 200 meters (20.20 seconds), and ninth in the outdoor 100 meters (10.14 seconds). He was also part of an All-SEC Outdoor 4 x 100-meter team in 2021 that placed third (39.08 seconds). Achane was twice an SEC Freshman of the Week (2021).

Speed Kills

If there is one thing that the Miami Dolphins do not lack it is speed. Whether it is Tyreek Hill using his blazing wheels to get past defenders downfield for a big gain or Mostert, and Achane carving defenses up for big yards, speed kills! If opposing teams did not know that, they should by now. If they do not, they will soon find out.
