PFF Ranks Their Top 10 NFL Rosters

The 2023 NFL season is just a few months away, and the folks over at PFF recently released a comprehensive rankings of the top rosters in the league. While there still could be a few major June 1st cuts and signings before the start of the season, rosters around the league are generally set in stone and shouldn’t change too dramatically between now and the start of the season.

Overall, the top 10 teams are as follows:

1. Philadelphia Eagles
2. San Francisco 49ers
3. Cincinnati Bengals
4. Kansas City Chiefs
5. Buffalo Bills
6. Dallas Cowboys
7. New York Jets
8. Baltimore Ravens
9. Los Angeles Chargers
10. Miami Dolphins

The Top 10 NFL Rosters, Per PFF

The Obvious Choices

It should come as no surprise that the Philadelphia Eagles have the top NFL roster in football. After a heartbreaking loss in the Super Bowl, Howie Roseman’s squad only improved over the past few months. Since losing the big game, the team kept a good amount of their impending free agents and also won the 2023 NFL Draft with steal after steal. With a loaded roster and a weak conference, don’t be surprised if this team makes it back to the Super Bowl in 2023.

It is admittedly weird seeing the New York Jets with one of the top NFL rosters, but the longer you think about it, the more this makes sense. Last year, this team found a way to go win seven games in spite of a quarterback room comprised of Zach Wilson, Mike White, and Joe Flacco. This team is loaded with young talent at just about every position, and even if Aaron Rodgers is no longer an MVP type of player, he’s still substantially better than Wilson.

And speaking of teams that deserve more respect, it’s good to see the Los Angeles Chargers near the top of the NFL roster rankings. Justin Herbert is one of the best young quarterbacks in the league, and the receiving trio of Mike Williams, Quentin Johnston, and Keenan Allen is one of the best in football. With Kellen Moore calling the shots, the offense should be able score points at will while a good-but-not-great defense gives Los Angeles a few stops per game.

The Surprises

The Cincinnati Bengals are one of the best teams in football, but do they really have a top three roster? Keep in mind that this exercise does not weigh the value of independent positions. There is a case to be made that the Bengals are the third-best team in the league since Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins can cover up a lot of flaws, but this defense could be a lot better.

In a similar vein, the Kansas City Chiefs are only this high because of Patrick Mahomes. The reigning MVP is a phenomenal player, and as long as he is under center, this team will be great. However, the rest of the roster has seen better days. Travis Kelce is still a stud, but there isn’t another proven pass-catcher on the roster. Meanwhile, the left tackle position is a massive question mark, and the defense has never been anything more than just ok since Mahomes arrived. Again, this team will be one of the elite units in 2023, but that’s only because Patrick Mahomes is the quarterback and Andy Reid is the head coach.
