Detroit Lions Trade D’Andre Swift to Philadelphia Eagles

D'Andre Swift Trade

After selecting running back Jahmyr Gibbs in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions have agreed to trade D’Andre Swift to the Philadelphia Eagles. Swift, a former second-round pick, spent the entirety of his career with the Lions but appeared to fall out of favor last year.

The D’Andre Swift trade was pretty inevitable after Jahmyr Gibbs officially joined the roster during the first day of the NFL Draft. Gibbs’ presence combined with the earlier signing of David Montgomery all-but confirmed that D’Andre Swift would not be on the roster in 2023, and now that assumption become reality. Through three seasons of play, Swift will end his Detroit Lions career with 1,680 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on 364 carries to go along with 156 receptions for 1,198 yards and seven additional scores.

D’Andre Swift originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Selected by the Detroit Lions, the Georgia product spent the majority of his rookie campaign as part of a committee. However, he earned a larger role as the season progresses and even earned a starting job by the end of the season. Appearing in 13 games while making four starts, the rookie finished his inaugural season with 521 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 114 carries to go along with 46 receptions for 357 yards and two scores.

Most expected Swift to build off that promising rookie season and establish himself as one of the best young runners in the league. However, that didn’t happen, as Swift basically had the same exact season as his rookie year. Unable to beat out Jamaal Williams on a woeful 3-13 Detroit Lions squad, the former second-round pick finished the year with 617 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 151 carries to go along with 62 receptions for 452 yards and two scores.
