2023 NFL Draft Profiles: Tyler Scott Scouting Report

After a solid junior season, Scott has declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. Originally from Ohio, Scott was a three-sport athlete in high school between football, basketball and track. He was a sprinter, and actually played running back before being labeled as a three-star recruit. In the end Scott elected to stay local and play for the Cincinatti Bearcats.

He did not see the field much in his freshman season but ended up making an impact his sophomore season even alongside future second round NFL pick Alec Pierce. Scott recorded 520 receiving yards despite only catching 30 passes, he’s a field stretcher to say the least. His sophomore campaign showed glimpses of what was to come the next year. In his junior season, Scott truly broke out. He recorded just under 900 yards on his way to a 2nd team All-AAC selection. He led the team in receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, and accounted for almost a third of all receiving yards for the team. After his standout season, Scott elected to forego his senior season and declare for the draft.

Scott’s pre-draft process has been one to follow. His track background certainly played a part in the combine, where he posted a very respectable 4.44 40 yard dash. He has reportedly already visited the Cincinatti Bengals which could be the next step in the homegrown Ohio prospect’s journey. He has linked up with Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner for some off-season training, and his draft stock has risen significantly since January.

Strengths

  • Track speed shows on tape;
  • Played running back in high school, and it shows after the catch;
  • Impressive catch radius despite smaller size;
  • Instant acceleration;
  • Loses zero speed while tracking the ball;
  • Manipulates defenders well with jab steps to blind spots.

Weaknesses

  • Still working on technique in medium and short routes;
  • Not fooling anyone with run blocking talent;
  • Rounds routes rather than hard cuts at times;
  • Let’s ball fly to him rather than meeting it;
  • Bothered heavily by press;
  • Will have to adjust to NFL from lesser competition (sorry AAC fans).

Bottom Line on Tyler Scott

Scott’s homerun threat ability is a welcome addition to any offense. It’s evident in the Tyler Scott draft profile he is still lacking a lot of the polish scouts would hope for but given that he is an early declare and a converted running back teams should cut him some slack.  Scott is the kind of player that will raise eyebrows if selected in the first three rounds but be considered a steal if he’s the first pick of the fourth round.

With this in mind, he is the right risk to take for NFL teams, and his speed was not just a combine fluke. His “you can’t tackle me” mentality with the ball in his hands is fun, and despite not showing it in college could be a great punt returner at the next level. He should slot in as a nice third or fourth wide receiver on the depth chart with the potential to rise in a year or two.

Tyler Scott Dynasty Outlook

Admittedly, there are six or seven wide receivers right on the fringe of the third-round managers should keep an eye on. Scott is towards the top of this list. His run after the catch ability is a gold mine, and if he finds his way into a starting job, he could be dangerous. Right now, he is mostly undrafted in rookie drafts, so grabbing him with a late fourth wouldn’t be the worst idea.
