2023 NFL Draft: Tyler Shough Scouting Report

Spending his first two seasons in Eugene, Oregon, as a member of the Oregon Ducks, Tyler Shough put up some pretty impressive numbers. In 11 games, over two seasons he was 118/182, for 1,703 yards, with 16 touchdowns against just six interceptions. After spending the 2019 and 2020 seasons in the Beaver State, Shough entered the transfer portal. For the 2021 season, Shough decided to join the Red Raiders of Texas Tech. In his first season with the Red Raiders, Shough was 64/92 for 872 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions, in only four appearances. In what would be his final season in Lubbock, Shough played in seven games, going 106/177 for 1,304 yards, while throwing for seven touchdowns, against four interceptions.

Strengths

  • Above average NFL height;
  • Very mobile for his size;
  • NFL-Caliber arm;
  • Leader; calls an audible at the line, if necessary;
  • Can fit the ball into tight coverage, with accuracy.

Weaknesses

  • Holds the ball too long;
  • Unsound biomechanics in throws;
  • Utilizes his arm strength only; does not incorporate lower body (hips), into throws;
  • Impatient in the pocket;
  • Final season was lackluster (Seven touchdowns against four interceptions).

NFL Comparison: A heavier, underdeveloped, Daniel Jones

Teams With Need At Position: Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Rams, Washington Commanders, Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Projection: Seventh round pick-UDFA

Bottom Line on Tyler Shough

Shough put together a solid couple of years at Oregon, especially the 2020 campaign, when he put up a career-high, 1,559 yards, and had 13 touchdowns against six interceptions. Shough has the potential to be an NFL starting quarterback, as he has many of the attributes, indicative of NFL quarterbacks, mainly his build and arm strength.

What is somewhat intriguing about Shough, is that he is considered a senior as far as the NCAA is concerned, which means he likely has at least one year of eligibility left, which begs the question that seems to be a mantra for quarterbacks entering the 2023 NFL Draft; why enter the draft, when you have more time to show what you are truly capable of? With college athletes being able to earn money through NIL deals, it is truly baffling as to why quarterbacks who have very limited resumes (Like Shough, who played a total of 22 games, which is about, just under two full seasons of college football), are entering the NFL draft and foregoing any remaining eligibility to showcase what they can actually do for an NFL team.

Shough could play one more year as a graduate student, maybe at a smaller school where he would get a lot of playing time  and could display his skills and improve his chances of being drafted in a higher round, in the 2024 NFL Draft.  Regardless, Shough will be given an opportunity with a team who needs depth at the quarterback position and/or, is willing to work and try to develop him into an NFL-ready quarterback, whatever that may look like for Shough (e.g., starter, back-up, third string). Look for him to be a late seventh-round pick or for him to sign as an undrafted free agent.
