The 2022 season was a relatively underwhelming one for Mike Gesicki. Playing on the franchise tag, the tight end was not a natural fit for first-year head coach Mike McDaniel’s offense. Because of this, several injuries to the quarterback position, and the arrival of Tyreek Hill, Gesicki finished the season with just 32 receptions for 362 yards and five touchdowns on 52 targets. The receptions, yards, and targets were all his fewest since his rookie year. Despite the lowered production, Gesicki still had good games, like when he recorded six receptions for 69 yards and two touchdowns against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 6.
Gesicki originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Selected by the Miami Dolphins, the Penn State product had a relatively quiet rookie season, recording 22 receptions for 202 yards and no touchdowns on 32 targets. However, he made a big leap in 2019, recording 51 receptions for 570 yards and five touchdowns on 89 targets.
Mike Gesicki continued to grow in 2020, as the Penn State product recorded 53 receptions for 703 yards and six touchdowns on 85 targets. He followed this up with the best season of his career in 2021. Establishing himself as a key part of the passing attack, Gesicki finished the 2021 campaign with 73 receptions for 780 yards and two touchdowns on 112 targets. The receptions, yards, and targets were all career highs and Gesicki was set to earn a big payday in free agency. However, the Dolphins used the franchise tag to keep the tight end in town for one more season.
In total, Mike Gesicki has played in 81 games throughout the course of his five-year career. While on the field, the Penn State product has recorded 231 receptions for 2,617 yards and 18 touchdowns on 370 targets.
