Cooper Rush, Dallas Cowboys, Agree to Contract
2022 was quite easily the best year of Cooper Rush’s young career. After Dak Prescott suffered a thumb injury in the Week 1 opener, Rush spent the next five games under center for America’s Team. While the quarterback didn’t set the world on fire, he still managed to go 4-1 while completing 58.0% of his passes for 956 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions. Prescott returned to the lineup in Week 7, and Rush only played sparingly after that.
Rush originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in the 2017 NFL Draft. Signing with the Dallas Cowboys, the Central Michigan product began his career battling for a roster spot. Rush made the Week 1 roster but quickly earned the primary backup job over Kellen Moore. Still, Prescott stayed healthy throughout the season, and Rush only appeared in two games. During his minimal time on the field, the rookie completed one of his three pass attempts for two yards.
Rush played sparingly over the next three years, appearing in just three games without attempting a single pass. The quarterback lost the backup job in 2020 to Andy Dalton, and spent the season bouncing between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys practice squad. However, he returned to Dallas in 2021 and found his way into five games, starting one. Taking over for an injured Dak Prescott, Rush performed well in the first start of his career, completing 24 of his 40 attempts for 325 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in a winning effort.
Ever since signing his rookie contract, Cooper Rush has appeared in 19 games while making six starts. During that time, the Central Michigan product has completed 59% of his passes for 1,475 yards, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions.
