Jerry Tillery, Las Vegas Raiders, Agree to Contract
As was evident from the above words, Tillery had a bit of a tumultuous season in 2022. Tillery played the first half of the season with the Chargers, and was in on only eight tackles and had one sack during that time. He was waived in early November and claimed by the Raiders. He did get to start a few games with the Raiders, but his impact was minimal and he was in on 10 tackles with zero sacks.
Tillery played college football with Notre Dame from 2015 to 2018. Over the final two years of his tenure with the team, he recorded 11.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. He was drafted with the 28th overall pick in 2019 by the Chargers. He had a low impact in his rookie season, though he did record two sacks. In 2020 he became more of a full-time starter. While he showed himself capable of making flashy plays on the line here and there, he was also sloppy and had a tendency to miss tackles, and so far has not lived up to his first-round billing.
Statistically, his best season came in 2021 when he was in on 51 tackles (24 solo) with a career-high 4.5 sacks. Despite making the occasional big play as a pass-rusher, the 2021 Chargers front seven ended up finishing as one of the worst run defenses in the league. In the re-tool that happened in the 2022 offseason, Tillery ended up getting benched and becoming a rotational player, and the Chargers also declined his fifth-year option.
Thus far in his career, Tillery has a total of 116 tackles (65 solo), 10.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles with one recovery.
