10-year NFL linebacker/defensive end, Ryan Kerrigan, has signed a new contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Terms of the deal are not yet available to the public. Kerrigan, a former first-round pick, spent the last 10 seasons with the Washington Football Team. Kerrigan was the eighth defensive player selected in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Ryan Kerrigan, Philadelphia Eagles, Agree to Contract

Ryan Kerrigan has been a dominant player eight out of the last 10 seasons. Unfortunately, he is no longer in his prime. Kerrigan has now become a rotational pass rusher at best. If your team is signing him with the intention of being an every-down starter, then you can expect to be disappointed. He would be best fit as a “piece” on a team in the hunt for a championship. Kerrigan has made his money and won his awards, now it is time to chase a ring.

Kerrigan initially entered the league in 2011 as the 16th overall pick of the NFL draft. Selected by Washington, Kerrigan has logged 330 solo tackles and 95.5 sacks in 10 seasons. Additionally, he has registered 147 quarterback hits and 26 forced fumbles. Kerrigan has also earned four Pro Bowl selections in his 10-year career. The most impressive stat may be that Kerrigan started in every single game for the first eight years of his career.

It is fair to say that Kerrigan has been one of the more productive players from the 2011 NFL Draft. In a year that produced players like J.J. Watt and Von Miller, Kerrigan has managed to hold his own. As of today, he sits only six sacks behind Watt and 11 behind Miller. It is not impossible to believe that Kerrigan can catch one or both of those players this coming season. The key for him will be who he decides to sign with. Kerrigan may end up deciding to chase another starting gig and sign with a lower quality team. It would be a mistake, but it is hard to knock a guy for believing in himself.
