Tamorrion Terry 2021 NFL Draft Profile
Come NFL Draft time, there is always a small group of players who are impossible to nail down when they will be selected. Be it injury concerns or off-field issues, they are a mystery. Which makes them as prospects, seem more interesting. This year, Tamorrion Terry fits into that group. Some even call him the ‘forgotten wide receiver’.
Terry went to Turner County High School in Ashburn, Georgia before redshirting his first year at Florida State in 2017. He was a four-star recruit from Georgia and an honorable mention All-ACC pick and FSU’s Offensive MVP in 2018 after leading the team in receiving yards and touchdowns (35-744-21.3, eight TDs in 12 games, 11 starts). As a redshirt sophomore, he garnered second-team All-ACC accolades as his team’s leading receiver (60-1,188-19.8). He led the country by averaging 58 yards on his nine touchdown receptions.
He chose not to enter the Draft and stayed for the 2020 season to continue working with the wide receivers coaches. However, a knee injury meant he only made five appearances that year. He opted out of the remainder of the season after undergoing knee surgery.
Strengths
- Accelerates through the route stem and maintains positioning down the field;
- Has great understanding of leverage and knows how to work his way open in traffic. He can be used on the outside and in the slot;
- Good athleticism and agility in small windows. Can use it against defenders;
- Uses frame and force to work towards the ball;
- Can make grabs in tight windows, then hang onto the ball through contact and rocket through soft slant coverage;
- Solid hands, good ability to go up and secure the catch in contested situations;
- Start/stop speed allows him to be a solid runner after the catch. Nifty footwork and acceleration. Can pick up 15 yards easily with his speed and balance;
- Strong ball release and has enough strength to fight through contact. He has a good understanding of releases and can get defenders to flip their hips the wrong way.
Weaknesses
- From a route-running perspective, he lacks refinement. A linear route-runner with limited route-tree experience;
- Loses momentum getting in and out of breaks;
- His speed testing numbers were not mind-blowing but he could still have enough to be a deep threat downfield (if properly developed);
- Inconsistent ball tracking will hurt downfield success;
- Catch techniques needs major work – drops ball frequently. Could be a lingering issue;
- Uses long strides, so he is less twitchy meaning slower reflexes.
Teams With Need At the Position: Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens, Las Vegas Raiders, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans
NFL Comparison: Marquez Valdes-Scantling
Projection: Second round
Bottom Line on Tamorrion Terry
Terry has enough talent to include him in the first-round conversation but his knee issues will likely push him down to Day 2. He had a successful college career before the knee injury put a halt to it. If he stays healthy, he will make an excellent backup and move up to starter within two seasons.
