Simi Fehoko 2021 NFL Draft Profile

The 2020 crop of wide receivers who entered the draft was deep with good top-end talent. The 2021 draft class may be even better and deeper. Simi Fehoko is one player who could be a really nice selection on the third day of the draft.

Fehoko is almost 23 years old, even though he has only played in three college football seasons. He is a little older than most prospects because he completed a two-year Latter Day Saints mission to Seoul, South Korea before he began his collegiate career.

In his senior year of high school he had over 1,000 receiving yards and was the Gatorade Utah Player of the Year, 2015 Utah Mr. Football and the USA Today Utah MVP. By the end of his high school career he had amassed 3,571 yards and 41 touchdowns (both state records).

Fehoko received offers from some big schools, including Clemson, Washington, Michigan and the school he ended up attending, Stanford.

In his freshman year in 2018 he saw very little action and had only one reception for six yards. In his sophomore campaign he played in nine games and had 24 catches for 566 yards and six touchdowns and averaged 23.6 yards per reception. In his junior year, the shortened 2020 season, he had 37 receptions for 574 yards and three touchdowns in just five games. That season he averaged 15.5 yards per catch and earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors. While playing for the Cardinal he tallied 1,146 yards on 62 receptions and had nine touchdowns in 16 total games (four starts), while averaging 18.5 yards per reception.

Strengths

  • Size and physicality
  • Makes contested catches
  • Can high point the ball
  • Good speed and athleticism (ran a 4.42 40-yard dash at Stanford’s pro day
  • Gets off the line quickly for a big receiver
  • Can accelerate and gain separation
  • Can play outside or from the slot
  • Excellent eye/hand coordination

Weaknesses

  • Played in only 16 games in college
  • Route running needs to be crisper
  • Must work on getting his head around, especially within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage
  • Lack of red-zone production
  • Not really elusive with the ball in his hands
  • Does not always play to his 40-yard dash time

NFL Comparison: Fehoko is listed as almost the same exact size as D.K. Metcalf (Metcalf is 6’4” and 229 pounds). While Fehoko may not produce like Metcalf, at least initially, the size, physicality and big play ability are very alike.

Teams With Need at Position: Baltimore Ravens, Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Tennessee Titans

Projection: fourth or fifth round, but a team could reach and take him in the third round.

Bottom Line on Simi Fehoko

Fehoko’s lack of production of in the red-zone wasn’t necessarily all his fault. He simply wasn’t utilized in scoring situations as frequently as he should have been. Simi Fehoko will not hear his name called on the first day of the draft this year and he will probably be used on special teams to begin with. But he could wind up being a really productive player with some good coaching and a team will be happy to have him on their roster.
