Peterson had an up and down year in 2020. He ended the season leading the Arizona Cardinals in interceptions with three on the year, in addition to 61 total tackles and eight passes defended. Peterson currently sits on 28 career interceptions, including a single season-high seven in 2012. However he did post his worst coverage grade since 2011 for the 2020 season. Ultimately, Peterson’s 2020 season was below the standard of the performances that earned him a spot on the NFL’s All-Decade: 2010s first team in April.
Peterson served a six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy in 2019. The suspension snapped Peterson’s streak of eight consecutive Pro Bowls. Prior to this, he played in and started 128 games straight. During this stretch he regularly appeared on the NFL’s annual ‘Top 100′ list, his #18 in 2015 his best so far.
Peterson announced he had been diagnosed with type-2 diabetes at the conclusion of the 2014 season. His play had seen him rewarded with 5-year, $70 million contract extension prior to that season. The extension came only one year after Bruce Arians had named Peterson the Cardinals’ starting corner.
As well as cornerback, Peterson also saw time earlier in his career as a kick and punt returner. Special teams prowess saw him named to the Pro Bowl as a rookie, as well as First-Team All-Pro. He has earned All-Pro honours three times in his career.
Prior to being drafted fifth overall in 2011, Peterson had a stellar career at Louisiana State University, playing alongside fellow NFL star Tyrann Mathieu. During his three year tenure with the Tigers, he recorded 135 total tackles and seven interceptions. He earned both the Jim Thorpe and Chuck Bednarik Award in 2010, for the nation’s best defensive back and defensive player, respectively.
