Cornerback Jason Verrett has signed a one-year, $5.5 million deal with the  San Francisco 49ers. The deal will keep Verrett with the team through the 2021 NFL season. Verrett has spent the last two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.

After being plagued by injuries for years, Verrett finally had a proper comeback season in 2020. In 13 games, he posted 60 combined tackles (50 solo), two interceptions, and seven pass deflections. These were also his first interceptions since the 2016 season.

Verrett played in college with TCU, where he made First-Team All-Big 12 in 2012 and 2013 and went First-Team All-American in 2013. He was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers (then in San Diego) in the first round in 2014. He showed promise during his rookie season; however, it was shortened by injury and he only played six games.

2015 proved to be his best season to date. He played 14 games, which remains the most he’s ever played in the NFL. He also had 47 combined tackles (42 solo), three interceptions with one pick-six, and 12 pass deflections. All of these were career highs (and only the tackling number has been broken since) and he got his lone Pro Bowl berth thus far as a result.

The next few seasons were plagued by absurd amounts of injuries for Verrett. In 2016, he pulled in one interception in four games before tearing his ACL. He only played one game in 2017 before undergoing season-ending knee surgery. 2018 was even worse, as he tore his Achilles on the first day of training camp. At that point, he signed with the 49ers in 2019; he only played one game and didn’t record a stat before being placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury. All in all, he only played six games in four seasons. Fortunately, he finally ended his injury struggles – at least for 2020.

Verrett thus far in his career has 140 combined tackles (122 solo), seven interceptions with one touchdown, 26 pass deflections, and one fumble recovery.
