Dak Prescott Signs Extension With Dallas Cowboys
This signing marks the end of one of the most discussed player contracts in recent memory. The Cowboys already showed some good faith prior to the extension. The team opted to place the exclusive rights franchise tag on Prescott on March 16th. This would have paid him $35 million, which is the average of the top five quarterback salaries in the league. However, with the long term deal now in place, Prescott and America’s team can look to the future.
Prescott’s Cowboys finished the 2019 season at 8-8. Though they were in the playoff hunt until the end, this was the team’s worst record with Prescott at the helm. Oddly enough, last season was Prescott’s best statistically. He finished the season with 4902 yards, 30 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a completion percentage of 65.1.
The 2018 season saw Prescott lead the Cowboys to the playoffs for the second time in his young career. He led the team to a 10-6 record behind 3885 passing yards with 22 touchdowns and just eight interceptions. Prescott also recorded six rushing touchdowns that year. In the playoffs, Prescott got a victory over the Seattle Seahawks, which was his first postseason win. The team lost to the Los Angeles Rams the following week.
Prescott’s numbers in the 2016 and 2017 seasons were remarkably similar. The main difference was his interceptions. Prescott threw just four picks his rookie year (2016) but threw 13 in his sophomore campaign (2017). His rookie campaign was the best from a team standpoint, as he led the Cowboys to a 13-3 record.
Prescott is originally from Sulphur, Louisiana. He played college ball at Mississippi State under quarterback guru, Dan Mullen. The Cowboys drafted him in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Prescott did his best with an extended rookie audition with Tony Romo hurt in the 2016 preseason and the rest is history.
Prescott will now look to lead the Cowboys for the foreseeable future and attempt to bring a sixth NFL Championship to Dallas.
