Longtime NFL Wide Receiver Reche Caldwell Reportedly Shot and Killed

Reche Caldwell hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2007 season, but has had quite the tumultuous post-career life. Caldwell fell into a short-lived life of crime after Googling his way into the drug market. The receiver served a 27-month sentence and appeared to have his life back on the right track prior to Saturday’s tragedy.

Following a successful collegiate career, Reche Caldwell first entered the NFL as a second-round pick with the San Diego Chargers. During his rookie season, the Florida product recorded 22 receptions for 208 yards and three touchdowns. Caldwell struggled to build on his rookie campaign, as he recorded just eight receptions for 80 yards during the 2003 season. He bounced back in 2004 and 2005, recording a combined 46 receptions for 662 yards and four touchdowns during his final two years with San Diego.

Caldwell’s best season came during the 2006 campaign. Serving as the top option for Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, Caldwell recorded 61 receptions for 760 yards and four touchdowns. These were all career-highs, as was his 14 starts. Reche Caldwell’s tenure with the Patriots ended on a low note, as he famously dropped two key passes in the 2006 AFC Championship Game. However, it’s also worth noting that he had a solid game one week earlier against his former team. Caldwell’s seven-reception, 80-yard performance against the San Diego Chargers played a big role in New England’s surprise victory, and he made also made a key late-game catch down the sideline.

After one season in New England, Caldwell finished his career with the Washington Redskins. Appearing in eight games, Caldwell recorded 15 receptions for 141 yards.
