Frederick Mauigoa 2020 NFL Draft Profile

Frederick Mauigoa was a solid four-year contributor at Washington State. He started 39 games in a row at center to end his college career. He was a second-team All Pac 12 selection his junior year. Mauigoa was named to Polynesian College Player of the Year Watch List, Rimington Trophy Watch List and Wuerffel Trophy Watch List heading into his senior season at WSU. He started at center all 13 games his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.

Frederick Mauigoa attended high school in Pago Pago, American Samoa at Tafuna High School. Viewed as a solid prospect out of high school, Frederick received offers to play at Nevada, Hawaii, UNLV, BYU, and Oregon State but decided to attend Washington State in Pullman, WA. Mauigoa played in the All-American Bowl, the first player from American Samoa to earn that honor. Frederick Mauigoa maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA in high school.

Mauigoa was a strong aspect of a good WSU offense in 2019. He started all 13 games as a senior and played very well, both in the running and passing game. He was a big part of the Cougars throwing for nearly 6,000 yards. That’s unbelievable production. Mauigoa has a ton of experience and played in a modified pro-style offense.  He did however not get as much run blocking opportunity as he did pass blocking.

Strengths

  • outstanding contact at the point of impact;
  • one of the best pass-blocking centers in football;
  • excellent football IQ – calls out assignments for the entire offensive line;
  • good size and experience;
  • has very good footwork and hips.

Weaknesses

  • does not have elite-level strength – will need some time in the weight room;
  • did have some snaps get away from him – needs to work on that;
  • at times struggles to seek blocks at the second level;
  • did not play in a balanced system – was very pass focused;
  • needs to improve his first step.

Projection: fifth to seventh round or undrafted free agent

Bottom Line

Frederick Mauigoa is a talented football player. He’s a three-year starter at Washington State and plugs easily into an NFL system. He’s got size but needs to increase his strength to be a complete center at the next level. He has a ton of experience and started three consecutive years at center every game. He rates out very high as a pass blocker and is a serviceable run blocker as well. Scouts love his attitude and football I.Q. but recognize his need for added strength. He’s ranked as one of the 10 best centers in the draft and will hear his name called late in the draft or could well become an undrafted free agent. It would not be surprising at all to see him make a roster and eventually become a solid starting center at the NFL level. He has the necessary tools in smarts, experience, and attitude.
