Peyton Barber has signed a two-year, $3-million contract with the Washington Redskins. The deal includes $600,000 in guaranteed money and will keep him in Washington through the 2021 season. He will join a crowded running back room that includes Derrius Guice, Adrian Peterson and Bryce Love.
Peyton Barber Signs With Washington Redskins
Barber played his college ball at Auburn. He would only spend two years as a Tiger. He entered the draft after 2015, a season in which he ran for over 1,000 yards and scored 13 touchdowns. Barber was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after going undrafted in 2016. He saw limited action for the first two years of his career. After the departure of Doug Martin, however, Barber became the starting running back for the Bucs in 2018.
Most people went into the 2018 season thinking Barber would play second fiddle to Tampa’s second-round pick Ronald Jones. However, he surpassed Jones in training camp and held onto the starting role all season long. He put up his best statistical season by far that year, rushing for 871 yards and six total touchdowns. When the 2019 season rolled around, most assumed that Jones would take on a bigger role in the offense. They were correct, but Barber still hung around and split with Jones and Dare Ogunbowale in the Tampa backfield. It was a forgettable season for him, as he would play in just seven games, rushing for under 500 yards.
Barber is still only 26 years old, and he has proven that he can be an asset on all three downs. Despite not being the best receiver out of the backfield, he is a proven blocker on passing downs, a crucial trait for three-down backs to possess. His power-running style is almost retro in today’s NFL, but he is averaging a very solid 3.6 yards per carry for his career.
