Longtime NFL journeyman quarterback Brian Hoyer signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots. Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed. Hoyer, a Michigan State product, spent the 2019 season with the Indianapolis Colts.
The #Patriots will bring QB Brian Hoyer back on a 1-year deal to join Jarrett Stidham and Cody Kessler… plus there is always the draft. Given where NE is cap-wise, this is probably it at the position.

Brian Hoyer, New England Patriots, Agree to Terms
Hoyer entered the 2019 offseason as the primary backup for the New England Patriots. However, Hoyer lost the job to fourth-round rookie Jarrett Stidham and spent the season backing up Jacoby Brissett with the Indianapolis Colts. The longtime journeyman appeared in four games for the Colts, making one start. It didn’t go that well, as Hoyer ended his season going 0-1 while completing 53.8% of his passes for 372 yards, four touchdowns, four interceptions, and a 65.7 passer rating.
Hoyer initially entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in the 2009 season. Signed by the New England Patriots, Hoyer beat out former third-round pick Kevin O’Connell for the primary backup job. Hoyer hardly saw the field during his first three seasons in the league, attempting just 43 passes while warming the bench for Tom Brady.
Hoyer entered 2012’s training camp battling Ryan Mallett for the primary backup job. The young talent eventually won out, and Hoyer spent the majority of the season unemployed. However, he landed on his feet at the end of the year, appearing in two games and making one start for the Arizona Cardinals. During his time on the field, Hoyer completed 30 of his 53 pass attempts for 330 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.
Brian Hoyer signed with the Cleveland Browns in 2013 and turned into arguably their best quarterback since the turn of the century. Over the next two seasons, Hoyer appeared in 17 games, making 16 starts. During his time in Cleveland, the former undrafted free agent completed 56% of his passes for 3,941 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions, and a 10-6 record. By comparison, all other Browns quarterbacks went a combined 1-15 over that timeframe.
Hoyer has also played for the Houston Texans, Chicago Bears, and San Francisco 49ers during the course of his career.
