Adrian Phillips’ 2019 season was heavily shortened by injury. Initially he was to be the starter at strong safety after Derwin James got injured, but then he broke his arm in Week 2. He returned in December, and ultimately played in only seven games with five starts. He finished with 36 tackles (23 solo), recording no other stats.

Phillips played football in high school at Garland, Texas. He then played in college with the Texas Longhorns from 2010 to 2013. He had 206 career tackles with Texas. In 2014, he went undrafted and was signed in June by the Chargers. He spent the first couple years of his career on and off the active roster. In his rookie year he only played in three games and only got one tackle.

In late October 2015, he finally remained on the active roster for good. His tackling and pass deflection stats went progressively up over the next few years. In 2017 he pulled in two interceptions, which remains a career high.

2018 saw him have the best season of his career, as he had 94 tackles (65 solo), nine pass deflections, one forced fumble, and one interception. Between that and his special teams play, he made his first Pro Bowl and was named First-Team All-Pro as well. In the Wildcard game against the Baltimore Ravens, due to excessive injuries to linebackers, he and a couple of other defensive backs found themselves playing in linebacker positions – and excelling. In that capacity, he had six tackles, one interception and three pass deflections (the latter being a career high in one game).

Thus far in his career, Phillips has 251 tackles (175 solo), five interceptions, two forced fumbles, and 18 passes defensed.
