Ryan Tannehill Signs Extension With Tennessee Titans

Tannehill is coming off probably the best season of his career. He had been traded to the Titans this past off-season, where he was expected to back up Marcus Mariota. Six games in, Mariota was benched Tannehill started all 10 games afterwards. In the process, he led the Titans to a 9-7 record and squeaked into the playoffs. The Titans ultimately got to the AFC Championship after two massive upset wins – more on the power of Derrick Henry than him, but he still contributed. During the season through his 10 starts, he passed for 2,742 yards, 22 touchdowns, four rushing touchdowns, and only six interceptions. He had career highs in passer rating (117.5 – which also led the league) and completion percentage (70.5). He also got his first Pro Bowl berth.

Tannehill played college ball with Texas A&M before being drafted in 2012 at eighth overall by the Dolphins. He stayed with the team through 2018. Tannehill started right out of the gate and didn’t miss a start for the first four seasons of his career. His likely best season with Miami came in 2014 when he passed for 4,045 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

2016 through 2018 marked an injury-plagued time period for Tannehill. He got knocked out late in the season in 2016, and thus missed the only playoff game he would’ve been able to play with Miami. He then missed the entire 2017 season and five games in 2018.

Besides only one playoff appearance for Miami in his seven years there, his injury problems likely contributed to the decision to trade Tannehill away. However, he found more success with Tennessee and resurrected his career in the process. Thus far in his career, Tannehill has 23,176 passing yards, 145 touchdowns, 81 interceptions, and 10 rushing touchdowns.
