A couple of days ago, Drew Brees shook the sports world by announcing he will continue to play. Almost every decision the Saints would have to make was centered around if Brees will come back to play. Once the announcement was made, the New Orleans Saints’ goal shifted to signing Drew Brees.
Saints general manager Mickey Loomis specifically stated he wanted to reach a deal by the time free agency opens. Everyone is looking to see how the New Orleans Saints will finesse the situation as they have two quality quarterback reaching free agency and only a $9.3 million cap space.
New Orleans Saints Goal Shifted to Signing Drew Brees
A Beautiful Disaster
Listen, in a perfect world, the Saints would sign Joe Burrow and a few defensive players to strengthen the secondary but we can’t just assume that everything will stay the same. Tabloids are playing they ‘will they’ or ‘won’t they’ game when it comes to the Saints and their quarterback. This season, it proved to be a good thing to have both Teddy Bridgewater and Taysom Hill as backups for Brees. Once Brees suffered his injury, the Saints used Bridgewater as a second-string backup and were still able to use Hill in the manner they have been able to do so.
Brees’ plan to continue to play shifts the Saints from thinking about who will be QB1 to who they can afford to keep. Teddy B’s value went up the moment the Saints went 5-0 under his time as starting quarterback. However, Taysom has been utilized in more positions other than quarterback. He has been the team’s special weapon as teams cannot plan to contain him and Michael Thomas in the same play. His energy and competitiveness radiate each time he is on the field.
There are plenty of articles floating around about keeping Taysom Hill but barely any about the possibility of Bridgewater staying with the Saints. It is almost like fans should expect for Teddy Bridgewater to leave. This would be a devastating blow to the team, but it would be a great opportunity for Bridgewater.
A Look Around
Brees’ return also affects other players around him. Remember that the team currently has $9.3 million in cap space. This means the teams needs to free up space. The Saints can do this restructuring certain contracts. They have been making it by on the off-season by making temporary fixes. This off-season, Saints fans could be looking at the release of some newcomers such as Janoris Jenkins, who was just starting to come into his own as a New Orleans Saint.
A Career Coming to an End
It pains me to think about Drew Brees retiring. Despite that he is in fabulous shape and still able to throw on target, it’s coming to an end. This season was the first time in years the quarterback missed a game. No doubt, his contract will be for one to two years, but the concern would be the salary cap and who they can mold as the next starting quarterback for New Orleans.
