The Miami Dolphins made the surprising decision to fire Chad O’Shea on Monday, and now we know why. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, longtime NFL coach Chan Gailey is coming out of retirement and will call plays for the 2020 Miami Dolphins.

Chan Gailey Hired As Next Miami Dolphins Offensive Coordinator
Chan Gailey is going to be back on an NFL sideline for the first time since 2016. Last we saw Gailey, he was calling plays for the 2016 New York Jets. That season, the Jets finished with a 5-11 record while averaging just 17.2 points-per-game. However, one year earlier, those same Jets went 10-6 and averaged 24.2 points-per-game.
Interestingly enough, Gailey has spent a large portion of his career working with current Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Gailey was head coach during Fitzpatrick’s stint with the Buffalo Bills from 2010 to 2012 and was also the offensive coordinator during Fitzpatrick’s time with the Jets. The Harvard gunslinger was his usual self and wasn’t demonstrably better or worse with Gailey calling the plays.
Chan Gailey first made his coaching debut as a graduate assistant with Florida back in 1974. After spending the next decade at the collegiate level, Gailey joined the NFL as Denver’s tight ends and special teams coach in 1985. Gailey spent the next six seasons with the Broncos before leaving to be the head coach of the now-nonexistent Birmingham Fire. He made his return to the NFL in 1994 with the Pittsburgh Steelers and eventually earned the job as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. His tenure in Dallas was short-lived, as Gailey spent just two seasons in Dallas with an 18-14 record.
After stops in the NFL and the college level, Gailey earned another shot at a head coaching gig. Back in 2010, the Buffalo Bills hired Gailey to be their next head coach. Gailey held on to the job for three years, going 16-32 with Ryan Fitzpatrick as his primary starter.
