Scout Talk: Jake Fromm – Quarterback – Georgia

Jake Fromm is a draft eligible junior who is an interesting prospect. Should he come out or return to Georgia for his senior year?
Jake Fromm

Jake Fromm is draft-eligible as a junior and has seen his stock rise after the injury to Tua Tagovalioa. If Jacob Eason decides to return to Washington, Fromm will jump up boards in a draft that doesn’t have a lot of top-end depth at quarterback. Georgia coaches thought so highly of him they chose him over Justin Fields and Jacob Eason, who are both having impressive 2019 seasons elsewhere.

Scout Talk: Georgia Quarterback Jake Fromm

Athletic Ability

Fromm is an adequate athlete who can do enough to not be a complete statue but is far from a threat running the ball. He can escape a pass rush on the rare occasion, but it’s not something an NFL team should expect or hope from him on a regular basis.

Competitiveness

Fromm is an outstanding team player who has allowed the running game at Georgia to be the main focus on offense since he became a starter without any public grumbling. He has good toughness but doesn’t take a beating behind the Georgia offensive line. An extremely consistent performer who may not be a natural leader but learned how to be one this year.

Mental Alertness

Fromm seems to have a great understanding of his offense and where the hot reads are. He also goes through his progressions quite well. Several odd boating incidents that led to injuries throughout his career raise questions, but they have just been accidents as reported. He knows when to get rid of the ball and when to pull the ball down or take a sack.

Strength/Durability

Fromm doesn’t play with a great deal of strength. However, he is durable and has a great NFL body frame. It’s unlikely that he’ll be injury-prone at the next level.

Position Skill

Fromm has very good mechanics and only has issues when he throws off balance or trusts his arm when he should step into throws. He has a solid arm that is good enough to make most throws, but he won’t be able to translate certain throws to the NFL unless he develops nearly perfect anticipation. His best attribute is his accuracy. Fromm can put the ball in places better than any potential quarterback in the 2020 class. However, he is only adequate throwing when on the move. If his feet are moving in the pocket, he doesn’t have the arm strength to make certain throws. He has an elite touch and doesn’t make very many mistakes. Fromm has shown flashes of having fumble problems, but it doesn’t seem to be a huge issue.

Overall

My mathematical grade for Fromm comes to a mid-third. I project that he will go in either the second round or at the top of the third. Due to the lack of upper-tier quarterback depth in the 2020 draft, I believe Fromm will declare. If he does, it seems impossible that he gets out of the second. Teams may feel that he’s worth a first-round pick as well, but that would be a reach based on my scouting. He has a good ceiling that could see him become a mid-tier two level quarterback, with an adequate floor that would place him in the middle of tier three. His floor makes him a fairly safe pick in the late second and early third, as he should easily be able to handle backup duties without the team falling apart if he has to play. As a starter, his lack of running skills and powerful arm may hamper him from being able to carry a team, but he could be successful with high-level talent around him.
