The New England Patriots are the best team in the league, and they’re facing off against a surprisingly 3-0 Buffalo Bills squad in Week 4. Vegas, in their infinite wisdom, made the Patriots seven-point road favorites as of Monday. While these two teams boast the same records, you should expect the Patriots to beat the Buffalo Bills and cover the spread for the fourth-straight week.
New England Patriots To Cover Spread
This might be the best incarnation of the New England Patriots in recent memory. That’s saying something, as the Patriots have won three of the past five Super Bowls, appeared in one more, and made it to every AFC Championship Game since 2011. However, this team has the potential to be better than each one of those outfits.
Offensively, this team has the potential to be the second-best unit in the league. While they can’t touch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Patriots boast an elite passing game complemented by a serviceable rushing attack. Tom Brady is still one of the best in the league, and the trio of Julian Edelman, Josh Gordon, and Phillip Dorsett form one of the most complete receiver trios in football. Edelman suffered a rib injury in Week 4, but all signs point towards the reigning Super Bowl MVP suiting up for Sunday’s matchup. James White is still a dangerous weapon out of the backfield and Rex Burkhead provides a valuable dual-threat presence. The offensive line is a little banged up, but Dante Scharnecchia has made less talented lines look elite in the past.
The offense is great, but the defense could be legendary. New England’s defense boasts eltie talent at all three levels of the field, but especially in the secondary. Stephon Gilmore is playing like one of the best cornerbacks in the league, Jonathan Jones is a top-five slot cornerback, and Jason McCourty and J.C. Jackson provide arguably the best depth in the NFL. Devin McCourty is in the midst of one of the best seasons of his career, and Patrick Chung is his usual reliable self.
The linebackers might be even better, as Dont’a Hightower and Kyle Van Noy have maintained their Super Bowl LIII forms into the regular season. Jamie Collins turned the clock back to 2015 and might be the NFL’s best linebacker through three weeks. Ja’Whaun Bentley still looks good, but he can’t see the field due to the ridiculous amount of talent in front of him.
The Bills are outplaying their expectations, but they’re not nearly as good as their 3-0 record suggests. Buffalo should have lost their Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets, but squeezed out a last-second 17-16 victory. Last week, Buffalo barely beat a subpar Cincinnati Bengals squad 21-17. The defense is good, but it can’t completely stop Tom Brady and that potent offense. Additionally, Josh Allen isn’t good enough to sustain drives and put up points on this defense. The Bills haven’t beaten New England in Buffalo since 2011, and that won’t change in Week 4. Smart money says the Patriots are going to win and beat the spread.
