In a truly surprising move, the Houston Texans have parted ways with running back D’Onta Foreman. According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, this move comes after the Texans “weren’t happy” with Foreman’s work habits and overall effort.
D’Onta Foreman Waived By Houston Texans
D’Onta Foreman was supposed to challenge incumbent Lamar Miller for the lead spot in the backfield, but that plan is clearly not going to happen. Foreman tored his Achilles tendon back in 2017 and spent the majority of the 2018 season working his way back from the injury. The Texas product appeared in just one game, recording seven rushing attempts for -1 yards. However, he showed some promise as a rookie when he recorded 327 yards and two touchdowns on 78 rushing attempts.
Foreman was remarkably productive during his final collegiate season. Throughout the course of the 2016 season, Foreman recorded 2,028 yards and 15 touchdowns on 323 rushing attempts, good for 6.3 yards-per-carry. This impressive season made him the 89th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. He started his rookie season as Lamar Miller’s primary backup before tearing his Achilles after 10 games.
With Foreman out of the picture, Houston’s running back depth chart now consists of Josh Ferguson, Buddy Howell, and Taiwan Jones as the primary backups to Lamar Miller. Howell has yet to record a carry in his professional career, while Ferguson has just 16 carries and 25 yards to his name. Taiwan Jones, meanwhile, has been in the league since 2011 but only has 44 career carries over that timeframe.
Foreman probably won’t be out of a job for long. Several teams around the league are searching for running back help, and the Tampa Bay Buccanneers could be a great landing spot. Even if he’s not immediately picked up, he’s sure to be one of the first players signed when injury inevitably strikes during the preseason.
