New England Patriots Sign Austin Seferian-Jenkins to One-Year Deal
Seferian-Jenkins played in five games in the 2018 season. After starting in the first five games, he suffered a core muscle injury and didn’t return after going to the injured reserve. He was moderately successful for the time he played. He had 11 receptions for 90 yards with one touchdown.
Though 2018 was Seferian-Jenkin’s first year with the Jaguars, they made it clear that they would move on without him, by declining his option on February 18th.
Prior to his time in Jacksonville, Seferian-Jenkins spent two seasons with the New York Jets. He was signed off of waivers on September 23, 2016, after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after a DUI charge. He played nine total games in 2016, with 13 receptions for 154 yards with one touchdown. The 2017 season was Seferian-Jenkins’ longest season. He played in 13 games for the Jets. But two of Seferian-Jenkins’ missed games in 2017 were due to suspension connected to his DUI charge the previous year. Seferian-Jenkins finished the 2017 season with a career-high 50 receptions along with 357 yards and three touchdowns.
To this point, Seferian-Jenkins’ career has seen a lot of turbulence. Whether through injury or suspension, he hasn’t played a full 16 game season in five years in the league. But he has good size, standing at 6’5″ and 262 lbs. He needs to show his new team that he can he can last the season, but he is only 26 and could still have some quality years left.
Seferian-Jenkins grew up in Gig Harbor, WA. After playing high school football, he chose to play at the University of Washington over other offers including one from Alabama. He decided to leave college after his junior year to enter the 2014 NFL draft. The Buccaneers drafted Seferian-Jenkins in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft.
