Houston Texans to Sign Safety Tashaun Gipson
Gipson played in and started all 16 games last season with the Jaguars. He had one interception with seven passes defended along with 54 total tackles. Though he didn’t have a Pro Bowl year, Gipson continued to be a solid option for the Jags at free safety.
Regardless of Gipson’s skills, the Jaguars needed to free cap space, and cutting Gipson saved them about $9 million. Gipson will be entering free agency with a good resume over the past three seasons with Jacksonville. In all, he had six interceptions with 16 passes defended and a combined total of 159 tackles with the Jaguars.
Gipson spent the first four years of his career as a member of the Cleveland Browns. He was undrafted but earned a spot on the team in 2012. Gipson spent 2012 proving his worth on the team and his ability to be a starter. In 2013, Gipson had a breakout season of sorts. He started in 15 games and recorded five interceptions, with 12 passes defended, along with one touchdown and a combined 94 tackles. 2014 was an even better season for him, as he had six interceptions, one touchdown, eight passes defended, and 52 combined tackles in only 11 games played. Gipson played in 13 games in 2015 amidst dealing with an ankle injury in the middle of the season.
Gipson attended high school in Dallas, TX where played in three sports. He was of course on the football team, as well as playing basketball and running track. Gipson played college football at Wyoming where he started in every game he played.
