Dwayne Allen, Miami Dolphins Agree to Two-Year Deal
Allen spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons serving as second-fiddle to tight end Rob Gronkowski. Primarily utilized as a blocking specialist, Allen finished his New England Patriots tenure with 13 receptions for 113 yards and one touchdown. According to Pro Football Focus, Allen finished the 2018 season as the 65th-ranked tight end in football. Allen was supposed to count $7 million against the salary cap, but New England opted to release him rather than incur that cap hit.
Allen initially entered the league as a third-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Selected by the Indianapolis Colts, Allen immediately made an impact alongside fellow rookie Andrew Luck. Appearing in and starting all 16 games, Allen recorded 45 receptions for 521 yards and three touchdowns. Unfortunately, Allen wasn’t able to replicate this success in 2013, as the tight end suffered a hip injury in the season opener against the Oakland Raiders.
In total, Allen spent five years with the Indianapolis Colts organization. During that time, Allen recorded 126 receptions for 1,451 yards and 19 touchdowns. The tight end appeared in 57 games, starting 56. Allen’s tenure in Indianapolis ended when the Colts sent Allen and a sixth-round pick to the New England Patriots in exchange for a fourth-round selection.
Prior to joining the NFL, Allen spent four years at Clemson University. After redshirting through his 2008 season, Allen made his debut on the football field in the 2009 season. Appearing in 14 games, Allen recorded 10 receptions for 108 yards and three touchdowns while working primarily as a blocker. In total, Allen finished his collegiate career with 93 receptions, 1,079 yards, and 12 touchdown receptions.
