Jacksonville Jaguars Release Malik Jackson, Four Starters

The Jacksonville Jaguars have decided to part ways with Tashaun Gipson, Carlos Hyde, Jermey Pernell and Malik Jackson. They are now free agents.

The Jacksonville Jaguars decided to do a little house cleaning today. They released four starters from last year’s team that brutally underperformed. The Jaguars had high expectations going into the season after being one premature whistle away from being in the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, they didn’t live up to those expectations. They went 5-11, and are picking in the top ten for the eighth time in nine years.

Jacksonville Jaguars Release Four Key Pieces Including Malik Jackson

Malik Jackson

It was a rough year for Malik Jackson. He had a career year in 2017, which saw him make it to his first and only pro bowl. Jackson managed three and a half sacks this season, after setting a career high with eight in 2017. By cutting Jackson, the Jaguars will save around $11 million in cap room. Jackson shouldn’t be a free agent for long though, as he should be able to step in and contribute to whatever team decides to pick him up.

Tashaun Gipson

Tashaun Gipson, along with Barry Church, Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye made up one of the most feared secondaries in the league. That success couldn’t be replicated in 2018 however. The Jaguars cut Church mid-way through the season after the team struggled against the pass. Gipson’s interception total was cut from four to one and now will become a free agent. Like Jackson, Gipson will get looked at by multiple teams who are in need of help in the secondary. The free agent market for safeties gets even richer now with the addition of Gipson.

Jermey Parnell

The Jaguars also released starting right tackle Jermey Parnell. Parnell has been with the team since 2015. He’s been the starter ever since he’s got here. Although he’s not a pro bowl caliber player, he’s been reliable for the Jaguars. Parnell started 57 out of the 64 games that he played with Jacksonville. Parnell should get looks in free agency, as the class for offensive lineman isn’t particularly strong.

Carlos Hyde

The Jaguars acquired Carlos Hyde mid-season from the Cleveland Browns. Many thought he would benefit from the Jaguars run-heavy offense. However, just like many other Jaguars, he didn’t perform up to expectations. In eight games with the Jags, Hyde carried the ball 58 times for 189 yards and didn’t score a touchdown. Hyde has had success in the past and should get looks in free agency.
