On Tuesday it was reported that the San Francisco 49ers will use their franchise on kicker Robbie Gould. Gould was one of the first free agent acquisitions made by head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch when the joined the 49ers organization in 2017. Gould is the first 49ers player to be tagged since 2012, when safety Dashon Goldson was hit with the franchise tag and he’s the first kicker the organization has ever tagged.

Gould and 49ers have until July 15 to agree to a long-term deal, but if Gould signs the franchise tag tender he will make just over $5 million (fully guaranteed) in 2019. There have been 12 kickers hit with the franchise tag since 2009 and half of them eventually signed new deals with the team that tagged them.
The 49ers electing to franchise tag him essentially means the team controls his rights.
Production
Gould spent his first 11 NFL seasons with the Chicago Bears, but he has been in San Francisco the last two seasons, after signing a two-year, $4 million dollar deal as a free agent.
Gould has converted 72-of-75 field goal attempts over the past two seasons, which makes him the NFL’s most accurate kicker during that time.
It was beginning to look like Gould returning to Chicago was a possibility, but it is smart of the 49ers to want to keep Gould in San Francisco. Both sides seem to want to get a long-term deal done and hopefully they can each an agreement before the July 15 deadline.
