David Johnson Signs Three-Year Contract with Arizona Cardinals
Johnson was entering the final year of his rookie contract. A third-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Johnson missed the grand majority of the 2017 season with a wrist injury. In his age-26 season, Johnson saw just 11 carries for 23 yards to go along with six receptions for 67 yards.
However, before last years injury-shortened campaign, Johnson established himself as one of the most electric and exciting players in the league. Johnson forced his way onto the field as a rookie, recording 581 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. He also flashed talent as a receiving back, hauling in 36 receptions for 457 yards and four touchdowns. Johnson played in all 16 games, starting five, and was a big reason the Cardinals were able to make it all the way to the 2015 NFC Championship Game.
Johnson built on his promising rookie season by having a fantastic 2016. Establishing himself as one of the best dual-threat runners in the league, Johnson ran for 1,239 yard and 16 touchdowns while adding 80 receptions for 879 yards and four touchdowns. He basically was the Arizona Cardinals offense, and his fantastic season earned him First-Team All-Pro Honors.
Interestingly, Johnson is the second running back to sign a lucrative extension this off-season. Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley signed a four-year, $60 million contract extension back in July. For a position that has been devalued in recent seasons, it’s interesting to see teams pour financial resources into these dual-threat runners.
The Arizona Cardinals and the newly-paid David Johnson take on the Washington Redskins in their season opener. Kickoff begins at 4:25, eastern time.
