Pittsburgh Steelers Should Look At Darrelle Revis

The Pittsburgh Steelers have long lacked that hall-of-fame cornerback. Pittsburgh native Darrelle Revis may fit the Steelers mold very well.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been lacking cornerback help over the past few seasons. It led them to drafting rookie Artie Burns in the first round. Burns had himself a solid campaign and could be the future number one corner in Pittsburgh. After that, Ross Cockrell and William Gay are next on the depth chart.

They’re likely going to spend a draft pick on one at some point over the three day process. But should they look into a former Pitt Panther standout born and raised in the Pittsburgh area?

Pittsburgh Steelers Should Look At Darrelle Revis

Darrelle Revis hit free agency following his worst season as a pro in the NFL with the Jets. It didn’t help his cause that he was involved in an assault case over the past few weeks despite the charges being dropped.

With his Hall of Fame track record, it’s likely that a team in desperate need of cornerbacks would take the chance and put aside his tumultuous off-season to bring Revis aboard. The Steelers fit that mold well.

Revis has publicly said that it has been a lifelong dream of his to play in Pittsburgh. It’s likely he’d have to take a significant pay cut to play in Pittsburgh. The Steelers are already tightly against the cap. Having said that, he’d be given a chance to play from day one and could have a very good shot at winning Super Bowl. He’s only has one Super Bowl ring, but was a free agent signing on the New England Patriots when he won his.

The one problem that comes up when discussing a move to the Pittsburgh Steelers is that he is open to discussing a move to safety. This, of course, doesn’t mean he’d have to move there. At the moment, the Steelers have Mike Mitchell at free safety and Sean Davis at strong safety. They likely would not part ways with Mitchell, and Davis looks to be the team’s future at the strong safety position, being drafted in the second round last season.

Revis was burned a lot last season which would make the Steelers cautious asking if Revis is an upgrade over anything the team currently has.

Cockrell and Burns seem like they are formidable choices at cornerback. However, Gay might be a different story.

Gay moved to slot corner last season as he is slowing down and can no longer cover teams’ top receivers. If the Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert feels that Revis can be a better cornerback in that position than Gay, the option is there.

Price becomes an issue with this deal as well.

The Steelers won’t overpay for Revis and are known to stay away from guys with legal troubles. Even though he is cleared, adding that to the Steelers refusal to hand out money in free agency could sway them away.

They Steelers could take a look at Darrelle Revis for the right price and they should consider it if he would.
