It’s been back-to-back action for the NTT IndyCar Series. The drivers hit the streets today for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix. A race that was full of overtakes, cautions, and battles, it felt like it could’ve been anyone’s win this afternoon.

King Of The Streets, Kyle Kirkwood Wins Chaotic Detroit Grand Prix
It was a tight race towards the end. After a red flag, there were only 13 laps left, and all the points were still up for grabs. It was Kyle Kirkwood, however, who found success at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix.
Kirkwood started from P3 and led multiple laps during the race before ultimately winning it all. This is his second race win of the season. Kirkwood is the only other driver to win a race this year aside from Alex Palou.
Behind him, it was a tight battle until the end between Santino Ferrucci and Colton Herta, who finished in second and third, respectively. This is Ferrucci’s career-best IndyCar race finish.

Penalties for McLaughlin and Siegel
The first caution of the race was brought out early on during Lap 14. Felix Rosenqvist spun and went into the tire barrier at turn eight but was able to continue racing.
During the race restart, Nolan Siegel saw a bit of trouble after spinning on track. He avoided making contact with the wall and was able to rejoin the race at the back of the grid. Siegel spun after Scott McLaughlin touched the back of his car.
McLaughlin was given a stop-and-go penalty for the incident.
Later on in the race, Siegel was given a stop-and-go penalty for failing to obey.
An Early End For The Championship Leader
On the race restart following the caution that was brought out after Ilott’s accident, another driver went into the wall. This time, it was Championship leader and Indy 500 winner Alex Palou.

Big Wreck During The Late Stages
It appeared to be a right-front suspension failure for Louis Foster as he was going into turn three. He skidded into the back of Felix Rosenqvist.
Rosenqvist ended up going into the tire barrier while Foster went down into a runoff zone. A stretcher was brought out for Rosenqvist after his radio message to the team mentioned his leg. Rosenqvist was checked and released from the medical center.
On lap 87, the caution was lifted and the race was red-flagged, citing severe wall and tire damage, deeming it unsafe to keep racing.
Other Notable Moments
The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix brought plenty of action to the city’s streets.
By lap 13, Rinus Veekay was running nine laps down and had previously reported that he had no power. During the cautions, he slowly made his way to the beginning, two laps down. By lap 32, Veekay had retired from the race due to a mechanical issue.
On lap 29, Devlin DeFrancesco’s right rear tire came off and was sitting on the track. A full-course caution was brought out for the race’s second yellow in less than 25 laps.
It wasn’t smooth sailing for Graham Rahal when it came to pitting. Rahal ended up parked in the pit lane for a while with his pit crew struggling to get the left-rear tire onto his car.
Another full-course caution had to be brought out after Callum Ilott found himself into the wall. Fresh out of the pits, Ilott slid straight into the wall at turn one with cold tires.
IndyCar’s next race is on June 15 in St. Louis for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500. This one will be a night race with the start time scheduled for 8:00 p.m., with Fox granting the series primetime coverage on Father’s Day weekend.
