The Spanish GP, which is no stranger to controversial moments, produced another shatter point moment in the Championship – courtesy of Max Verstappen and George Russell.
Following a skirmish in Turn 1, Verstappen hit into his Mercedes rival in the second sector – resulting in a 10-second penalty that put him down in 10th.
In a race where Piastri and Norris finished 1st and 2nd, this incident is extremely consequential in the standings.
Piastri, who leads the Championship, is now 49 points ahead of Verstappen. Even in similar machinery, this gap would be difficult to overcome.
However, in a season where McLaren have a notable advantage, it will require a spectacular comeback for the Dutchman to cut the points gap.
As different voices dissect Verstappen and Russell’s clash, Nico Rosberg believes the 4-time Champion should have been disqualified.
Verstappen and Russell contact dominates Spanish GP discussion
In a race where McLaren secured another 1-2 finish, it is Max Verstappen who has stolen all the headlines.
Prior to the final Safety Car, the reigning Champion was executing a very impressive race in the RB21.
Thanks to an aggressive three-stop strategy, Verstappen managed to keep Piastri and Norris under pressure throughout the race.
This brilliant execution from driver and team, which asked questions of the superior MCL39 machine, completely disappeared after Kimi Antonelli retired.
A poor decision to put Verstappen on softs, followed by the Dutchman’s clash with George Russell, will condemn the first 50 laps of the race to the dustbin of history.
Instead, it is the clash between the Dutchman and the Briton that has captured the attention of fans.
Rosberg gives his verdict
There are few drivers better qualified to comment on such incidents than Nico Rosberg.
In addition to having the insights and knowledge that only an F1 Champion can provide, Rosberg has first-hand experience of being involved in an incident in Spain.
His crash with Lewis Hamilton in 2016 (which coincidentally led to Verstappen’s first win), is one of the most iconic moments between title rivals in the sport’s history.
When commentating for Sky Sports during the Spanish GP, Rosberg made his thoughts on Verstappen and Russell’s clash crystal clear.
The 2016 Champion explained why he believes the FIA should have issued the harshest possible penalty:
“That’s a very lenient one [Verstappen’s penalty] from my point of view.
“Remember Sebastian Vettel against Lewis Hamilton in Baku 2017?
“It looked like a very intentional retaliation. Wait for the opponent, go ramming into him – just like you felt the other guy rammed into you at turn 1.
“That’s something which is extremely unacceptable.
“And I think the rules would be a black flag, yes? If you wait for your opponent to bang into him, that’s a black flag.”
Understandably, this moment will dominate F1 news headlines and discourse until the next race in Canada.
Beyond the inevitable debate on this issue is the direct impact this incident will have on the Championship.
Not only has Verstappen lost plenty of points, but he is now one penalty point away from a race ban – which puts him on thin ice for the foreseeable future.
