The Leafs completed a trade Monday, February 24th with the Colorado Avalanche. The Leafs acquire defenceman Calle Rosenin exchange for goaltender Michael Hutchinson.

In Hutchinson, the Avalanche get a good AHL starting goaltender. This season, Hutchinson has a record of 4-9-1. He has a save percentage of 0.886 and a goals-against-average of 3.66. Those totals are slightly worse compared to last season, where he sported a 0.887 save percentage and a 3.27 goals-against average. Over his 7-year NHL career, Hutchinson has played for the Winnipeg Jets, Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs. In that time, he has a career 0.905 save percentage and 2.81 goals-against average. He was originally drafted in the 3rd round, 77th overall of the 2008 NHL draft by the Boston Bruins.
What This Means for the Future
Hutchinson goes to Colorado after a tough season in Toronto. While ineffective at the NHL level, Hutchinson proved under Keefe he’d be an adequate third-string goalie in a pinch. He is most effective in the AHL as a starter that can help their team make a Calder Cup Playoff run.
Rosen returns to Toronto after being traded to Colorado in the deal that sent Nazem Kadri there in exchange for Tyson Barrie and Alexander Kerfoot. Rosen has spent most of the season in the AHL but has played some games at the NHL level. He was an integral part of the Marlies defence while in Toronto, and it seems he can fill that role yet again. Toronto initially acquired Rosen as a free agent out of Sweden in 2017.
