Detroit Red Wings Claim Cody Goloubef Off Waivers

The Detroit Red Wings announced that they have claimed defenceman Cody Goloubef off of waivers from the Ottawa Senators.

Cody Goloubef Claimed

Goloubef has one goal and one assist for two points to go along with eight minutes in penalties this season. His possession numbers are 42.8 percent Corsi For and a relative Corsi of -6.3. Although Goloubef’s numbers are not the strongest, he can still provide a physical edge on the ice and is a solid bottom pairing defender.

Over his eight-year NHL career, Goloubef has played for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Colorado Avalanche and the Ottawa Senators. In 158 career NHL games, the Mississauga, Ontario native has three goals and 22 assists for 25 career points. He was originally drafted in the second round, 37th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2008 NHL draft.

What This Means for the Future

As the time comes close to the NHL trade deadline, the Red Wings will look to be sellers to build up for next season and beyond. Many people believe that Mike Green has seen his last few days in a Red Wings uniform and will be dealt at the deadline. Having a veteran like Goloubef is perfect. He can slot into a bottom pairing role and help mentor the younger guys.

Overall, the Red Wings and their fans will wish to erase this season from their minds as soon as possible. Detroit is currently holding the worst record in the NHL at 15-43-4. No other team is close to the Red Wings in terms of total points. All the organization and their fans can hope for is the chance to select coveted prospect Alexis Lafreniere come the NHL draft in Montreal this June.

The Red Wings play the New York Islanders tonight in Brooklyn before heading home for a three game home stand.
