The Ottawa Senators have agreed to trade Jean-Gabriel Pageau to the New York Islanders in exchange for a first-round pick in 2020, a second-round pick in 2020 and a third-round pick in 2022.

The Senators completed a trade today, sending Pageau to the New York Islanders in exchange for three draft picks. The third-round pick the Senators receive is a conditional pick. The Senators will only receive this pick if the New York Islanders win the Stanley Cup this season.

In Pageau, his new team gets a two-way centre with a strong, versatile game. This season, he scored 24 goals and 16 assists for 40 points, adding 32 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers are 48.1 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of -0.1 percent. Those totals are way up compared to last season, where he scored four goals, eight assists for 12 points in only 39 games. Over his eight-year NHL career, Pageau has played exclusively for the Senators. In that time, he has 87 goals and 95 assists for 182 career points in 428 career games. He was originally drafted in the fourth round, 96th overall of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by Ottawa.
What This Means for the Future
Pageau comes as purely a playoff rental for his new club, as he is a pending restricted free agent. His deal carries a $3.1 million cap hit for the remainder of this season.
Pageau is custom-made for the playoffs, and he’s always been a playoff performer as well. In his last trip to springtime hockey, Pageau played in 19 games with the Senators en route to the Eastern Conference Final. Pageau had eight goals and tacked on two assists for 10 points while adding excellent faceoff ability and solid defensive play. If he can provide that for his new club at a $3+ million cap hit, they’ll be extremely satisfied with their acquisition. While he may not re-sign with the team, he certainly has a shot at helping his new club achieve a Stanley Cup.
