Vancouver Canucks Lose Jacob Markstrom to Injury, Acquire Louis Domingue

Louis Domingue

The New Jersey Devils have agreed to trade Louis Domingue to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Zane McIntyre.

Devils Trade Louis Domingue to Vancouver

Key Players

This will be Domingue’s third team this season. He began the season with the Tampa Bay Lightning before getting traded to the Devils back on November 1st. The Devils received a quality back up from the Lightning. He originally began the season in the AHL with the Binghamton Devils, before being recalled on November 18th. At that time the Devils sent Cory Schneider to the minors to work on his game. In 16 appearances this season with the Devils, Domingue has a 3.79 goals-against average and a .882 save percentage. During a stretch when MacKenzie Blackwood was injured, Domingue took over the starting role.

Originally drafted 138th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2010 NHL Draft, Domingue will be on his fourth team in his six-year NHL career. In 138 appearances, Domingue has a 3.04 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage. His only playoff appearance came during Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Washington Capitals. He stopped all seven shots he saw in 18 minutes in net.

What This Means For Domingue’s New Team

Adding Domingue to the new team will add depth to the goaltending position. He brings experience and is a quality back up goalie. With his current cap of $1.15 million, he is cheap enough for the new team to bring on. What’s even better for the team adding him is that they will only be responsible for less than that.

The transition from the Lightning to the Devils was tough for him. While he adjusted to the players in front of him nicely, his play can elevate with a better defence. No goalie was going to succeed in New Jersey with that defence. Sure, they can put a good two to three-game stretch together, but now Domingue can play his role as a backup goalie. He will get into games to give the starter some rest. However, the team will not have to rely on him to win games.

Markstrom

This move was in reaction to a potential injury to goalie Jacob Markstrom. Markstrom has been struggling with a knee injury and went through an MRI before heading back to Vancouver.
