The Toronto Maple Leafs have re-signed defenceman Martin Marincin to a one-year contract worth $700,000. This contract carries him through the 2020-21 season.

Martin Marincin Signs With the Toronto Maple Leafs

Over his seven-year NHL career, Martin Marincin has played for the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs. He has put up four goals and 26 assists for 30 career points in 214 career games. He was originally drafted in the second round, 46th overall of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers.

Last season he scored one goal and four assists for five points. He also added 12 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 53.5 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 2.0.

Marincin has yet to register a point this season in 13 games played.

What does this Mean for Toronto and Marincin?

Marincin provides mostly a depth role for the Leafs. The most games he has played in a season is 65. That came in his first year in Toronto, the 2015-16 season. So far this year he has appeared in 13 games. It is likely that he will split playing time between the NHL and minors throughout the duration of this contract, or at the very least be seventh defenceman coming in and out of the lineup.

Toronto has struggled to find quality defenders for many years, especially on the right side. The Marincin signing does not help with that issue as he is a left-shot defender. However, they do have defensive prospects in the pipeline such as Timothy Liljegren and Rasmus Sandin who have both played with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL this season. While only Liljegren is a right shot of those two, it at least gives hope to the Leafs defence group moving forward. Sandin did play six games with the Leafs this season, registering two points.

At best, Marincin can be a decent third pair defender. Marincin has recently been playing alongside Cody Ceci and has been averaging 14:19 of ice time.

Toronto will next play on January 12 against the Florida Panthers.
