NHL Predictions

Ottawa Senators vs Detroit Red Wings

Head to Head: Senators 2 – 0 Red Wings

The Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings have both had difficult seasons thus far. Senators fans have been lucky enough to see their team get the better half of the first two matchups with Detroit this season. Ottawa is currently on a five-game losing streak and tonight is arguably their best chance to snap it although it won’t be an easy task. If they can stick to their game, Ottawa will take a 3-0 season series lead and have a chance for the season sweep.

Detroit has a record of 2-8-0 in their last 10 games and one of those wins came in their last game. Although they have struggled so far this season, they would like to build on the momentum gained from taking down the Montreal Canadiens. If they can string together a couple of wins, some players may be able to keep their jobs into next season. For now though, major turnover appears to be awaiting this team in the offseason.

Prediction: Red Wings win 3-1

Arizona Coyotes vs Carolina Hurricanes

Head to Head: Coyotes 0 – 0 Hurricanes

The Arizona Coyotes have been one of the biggest surprises this season yet managed to keep themselves somewhat under the radar. Their young talent under the guidance of veterans like Taylor Hall and Phil Kessel should make this team a potent threat. Arizona has been one of the best defencive teams in the NHL thus far but that may not show tonight. Without both Darcy Kuemper and Antti Raanta, a recently boosted Hurricanes offence might have a good night.

Justin Williams has come back for what could be one last run at the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes. Not only does he bring additional depth to their forward group, but he also brings in confidence and experience. The fact that he came back shows this young team that the older vet has confidence they can make another run at the cup. It’s also worth mentioning that he chose Carolina even though other contenders were reportedly interested.

Prediction: Hurricanes win 5-3

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Colorado Avalanche

Head to Head: Penguins 1 – 0 Avalanche

Even though the Pittsburgh Penguins have lost key players to injury, the depth forwards have picked things up, namely Bryan Rust. He has 10 points in his last seven games, including a four-point night against the Nashville Predators on December 28th. There is also the potential for Sidney Crosby to return to the lineup as he skated in practice this past Wednesday. If he manages to make a return, the Avalance could be in for a rough night.

The Colorado Avalanche are having a breakout season and Cale Makar has been a huge factor in their rise to being a major contender. The young defender got his first NHL action in the playoffs last season, joining the team after completing his college season. This year he is a frontrunner for the Calder trophy and is just four points shy of a point per game pace. If he keeps up that production, he could develop into one of the premier offensive defenders in the NHL.

Prediction: Avalanche win 3-2

That does it for today’s slate of games. Check back tomorrow for more NHL predictions.
