Alex DeBrincat Re-Signs With Blackhawks
DeBrincat has spent his first two seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks. He has put up 69 goals and 59 assists for 128 career points in 164 career games. He was originally drafted in the second round, 39th overall of the 2016 NHL Draft by the Hawks.
Last season he scored 41 goals and 35 assists for 76 points. He also added 15 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 50.3 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 1.2. DeBrincat’s 41 goals and 76 points were ranked in the top three on the BlackHawks.
What This Means for the Future
DeBrincat is slowly emerging as a star for the Chicago Blackhawks after putting up 41 goals last season. At the young age of 21-years-old, the team clearly wants to build around his star-power. His 41 goals were tied for sixth in the league last season. He has shown to be a huge help on the Blackhawks powerplay putting up 13 goals with the man-advantage. This signing is a smart move seeing that DeBrincat would have been an RFA next summer and has shown that he can demand big money.
The Debrincat deal will expire at the same time as Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane‘s contracts. Both guys will be in their early thirties when their deals expire and it will be interesting to see how the Blackhawks deal with that cap situation when the time arrives. Kane and Toews have already proven that they are super-stars in the NHL. Expect DeBrincat to have another major year after being rewarded with a contract extension.
