Chicago Blackhawks Calvin de Haan Out Among Other Injuries

Calvin de Haan

The Chicago Blackhawks training camp has not started in the desired way. Three players are reporting with injuries. Defenceman Calvin de Haan, whom the Blackhawks acquired in the summer, will be out at least two to three weeks with a groin strain. He also recovers from shoulder surgery. Kirby Dach is out indefinitely with a concussion and forward Philipp Kurashev is day-to-day with the left knee and a shoulder contusion.

Chicago Blackhawks Suffer Several Injuries Including Calvin de Haan

Calvin de Haan is a former first-round draft pick by the New York Islanders. In 2018, as an unrestricted free agent, the Canadian defenceman signed a four-year deal worth $4.55 million per season with the Carolina Hurricanes. Late in June this year, the Blackhawks traded for him along forward Aleksi Saarela in exchange for goaltender Anton Forsberg and defenseman Gustav Forsling. De Haan has skated in 378 NHL regular-season games.

The centre Kirby Dach was the Blackhawks third overall draft choice in the 2019 NHL Draft. The Blackhawks signed him to a three-year entry-level deal in the offseason. Chicago was hoping to see their recent prolific draft choice progress. His concussion is certainly not ideal for any of the parts. The 18-year-old centre should be out indefinitely.

Kurashev is the fourth-round draft pick by the Blackhawks from 2018. The 19-year-old Swiss forward has spent the last season in the QMJHL and also played in three AHL games before heading to the IIHF World Championships. He signed an entry-level contract with the Blackhawks last March.

What Does This Mean For The Future

Calvin de Haan has had some injuries already with the Hurricanes. It’s almost sure that he will miss the entire training camp for the Blackhawks, which is not an ideal start for the left-handed defenceman. Both Dach and Kurashev were hoping to make an impact on the camp and possibly earn a roster spot for the NHL season. Those ambitions took a step back with these injuries.
