- Central Division – Purple
- Atlantic Division – Gold
- Metropolitan Division – White
- Pacific Division – Black
Initial reaction online to the unveiling has generally been positive. The colors pay homage to the uniforms worn by the Los Angeles Kings throughout their 50 year history.
Purple and gold were the Kings primary colors from their inaugural season in 1967 until 1988. For the 1988-89 season, the club switched to a more generic uniform consisting of silver, black, and white. This lasted until 1993, spanning the majority of Wayne Gretzky‘s Los Angeles tenure. The Kings fiddled around with purple in the following years, but re-adopted the colorless scheme in 2008 and have used it ever since.
Keeping with the theme of nostalgia, the 2017 NHL All-Star jerseys were given the stars and stripes pattern seen on the ones worn from 1989-91. Being as the NHL is celebrating its milestone 100th anniversary, there are ten stars on each jersey. Each star symbolizes a decade of the league’s rich history. The NHL also explained that there will be four stars on the socks, representing the four divisions the league uses today.
The All-Stars are set to take stage at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, hence their choice of color. The Annual Skills Competition will take place on January 28, while the 3-on-3 tournament will be played on the 29th.
The rosters for each team, as voted by fans, were released yesterday and can be viewed here. P.K. Subban, Carey Price, Connor McDavid, and Sidney Crosby were named captain of their respective divisions.
